Seafood is any sort of sea life considered food by humans, prominently including fish and shellfish. Shellfish include various species of mollusks (e.g. bivalve mollusks like clams, oysters, and mussels and cephalopods like octopus and squid), crustaceans (e.g. shrimp, crabs, and lobster), and echinoderms (e.g. sea cucumbers and sea urchins). Historically, marine mammals like cetaceans (whales and dolphins) also as seals are eaten as food, though that happens to a lesser extent in times. Edible sea plants like some seaweeds and microalgae are widely eaten as sea vegetables around the world, especially in Asia. within us, although not generally within the UK, the term “seafood” is extended to water organisms eaten by humans, so all edible aquatic life could also be mentioned as “seafood”.[citation needed]

The harvesting of untamed seafood is typically referred to as fishing or hunting, while the cultivation and farming of seafood is understood as aquaculture or fish farming (in the case of fish). Seafood is usually colloquially distinguished from meat, although it’s still animal in nature and is excluded from a vegetarian diet, as decided by groups just like the Vegetarian Society after confusion surrounding pescetarianism. Seafood is a crucial source of (animal) protein in many diets round the world, especially in coastal areas.

Most of the seafood harvest is consumed by humans, but a big proportion is employed as fish food to farm other fish or rear livestock. Some seafood (i.e. kelp) is used as food for other plants (a fertilizer). In these ways, seafood is wont to produce further food for human consumption. Also, products like animal oil and spirulina tablets are extracted from seafood. Some seafood is fed to aquarium fish, or wont to feed domestic pets like cats. a little proportion is employed in medicine or is employed industrially for nonfood purposes (e.g. leather).[citation needed
